Timber is the substrate people ask about most and the one that deserves the most caution. It is heat-sensitive, highly variable, and results depend on the species and its history as much as on the coating.
A pulsed laser can remove many paints, varnishes and limewashes from timber, and it is particularly useful where profiles and carving make sanding slow. It is not equally effective on every timber and coating combination, and wood is the substrate where testing matters most.
Traditional timber stripping is some combination of chemical stripper, scraping, sanding, detail sanding and heat. Each has a cost: chemicals bring dwell time and residue, scraping bruises detail, sanding rounds over the crisp edges that make period joinery worth restoring in the first place. A non-contact process that follows the profile rather than cutting across it is genuinely useful in that context.
On steel, the substrate is reflective and thermally conductive, which gives a wide safe operating window. Timber gives you a narrower one. Grain density varies within a single board, so softer early wood absorbs differently to harder late wood. Moisture content changes the response. Previous treatments, oils and preservatives sit in the surface and behave in their own way. Two oak doors from the same house can strip differently.
The practical consequence is that a competent operator works up from conservative settings on a discreet area, and accepts that some pieces need a different approach.

There is no water involved, so it does not swell or raise grain the way a wet process does. You will normally still want a light conventional finish before coating.
