Laser Paint & Varnish Removal from Wood

Timber is the substrate people ask about most and the one that deserves the most caution. It is heat-sensitive, highly variable, and results depend on the species and its history as much as on the coating.

A pulsed laser can remove many paints, varnishes and limewashes from timber, and it is particularly useful where profiles and carving make sanding slow. It is not equally effective on every timber and coating combination, and wood is the substrate where testing matters most.

Traditional timber stripping is some combination of chemical stripper, scraping, sanding, detail sanding and heat. Each has a cost: chemicals bring dwell time and residue, scraping bruises detail, sanding rounds over the crisp edges that make period joinery worth restoring in the first place. A non-contact process that follows the profile rather than cutting across it is genuinely useful in that context.

Why wood behaves less predictably than metal

On steel, the substrate is reflective and thermally conductive, which gives a wide safe operating window. Timber gives you a narrower one. Grain density varies within a single board, so softer early wood absorbs differently to harder late wood. Moisture content changes the response. Previous treatments, oils and preservatives sit in the surface and behave in their own way. Two oak doors from the same house can strip differently.

The practical consequence is that a competent operator works up from conservative settings on a discreet area, and accepts that some pieces need a different approach.

Worth being clear about: We do not claim that every coating can be removed safely or economically from every timber. Species, coating, moisture, age and previous treatment all change the outcome. Correct testing and process development are essential, and on some pieces a conventional method remains the right call.

Where it works well

  • Flaking limewash and distemper on structural oak.
  • Painted mouldings, beading and carved detail where the profile must survive.
  • Selective removal, taking one layer back without going to bare timber everywhere.
  • Pieces where chemical residue in the grain would be a problem for the subsequent finish.

Where to be careful

  • Thin veneers and marquetry, where there is very little material to play with.
  • Very thick, multi-layer built-up paint, which can need enough passes to be uneconomic.
  • Resinous softwoods, which can scorch more readily than a dense hardwood.
  • Anything where a scorch mark would be unacceptable and cannot be sanded back.

Will it scorch the wood?+

It can, if the parameters are wrong or the operator dwells. Correct settings and steady movement are what prevent it, which is why training and test panels are part of every machine we sell rather than an optional extra.

Does it raise the grain like water-based stripping?+

There is no water involved, so it does not swell or raise grain the way a wet process does. You will normally still want a light conventional finish before coating.

Can it strip a whole kitchen of doors?+

It can, and whether it is the most economic route depends on the coating, the volume and what your current method costs. That is exactly the comparison to send us.
