Mould and tooling cleaning is the application where the non-contact nature of laser ablation matters most, because the surface being cleaned is a precision asset whose geometry and finish are the product. Anything abrasive risks the thing you are trying to protect.
Production tooling accumulates release agents, carbon, cured polymer, rubber residue, oils and general contamination. The conventional answers are solvent tanks, abrasive pads, dry ice or manual scrubbing, and each carries a cost: downtime, dismantling, solvent handling, or gradual wear of the tool surface.
Downtime is usually the number that decides it. If cleaning currently means pulling a tool, sending it out and waiting, and the alternative is cleaning it in the press during a changeover, the comparison is not really about the cleaning at all.

Often yes, where there is line-of-sight access and the exclusion zone can be controlled safely. That in-place capability is usually the main commercial attraction.
Correctly parameterised, the intent is to remove the residue and leave the tool surface unaffected. Because tooling is a high-value asset with treatments and platings involved, this is one application where we would always want to test on your actual tool before you commit.
Dry ice is also non-abrasive and well established for tooling. It needs a CO2 supply, logistics and storage, and it is noisy. Laser has no consumable stream and no supply chain. Which suits you depends on your contamination, your access and your existing setup.
