Preparation is usually the longest and least profitable stage of a refinishing job. Laser ablation is another tool for that stage, useful in some situations and not in others.
For a refinisher, the value of laser ablation is rarely that it finishes a surface. It is that it can take out or shorten the slowest part of the preparation, particularly on profiled and detailed work where abrasives are awkward and slow.
Refinishing businesses deal with the same recurring problems: failed coatings that have to come back to bare substrate, multiple layers built up over decades, varnish and lacquer, oxidation, and components whose mouldings and corners make mechanical sanding a fiddle. Every one of those is labour, and labour is the margin.
Large flat open areas are usually faster by conventional means. Very thick, heavily built-up coatings can take enough passes that another method is more economic. And where a coating manufacturer specifies a particular surface profile, that specification governs, not the tool.
In most refinishing shops the laser does not become the whole preparation process. It becomes the first stage of it: laser ablation, then a reduced conventional preparation, then the finish. What changes is how many hours sit in that middle step.

Not entirely, and be wary of anyone who promises that. What it commonly does is reduce the stripping stage so that what remains is a lighter conventional preparation rather than a full strip.
The laser removes it as particulate rather than dust clouds, and extraction with appropriate filtration captures it, which some shops find easier to control than sanding. The waste is still lead-bearing and has to be handled and disposed of under the rules for that material.
